Blackberry Winter by Sarah Jio
ISBN: 9780452298385
Love how the book got it's title and the story behind the title.
1933 and Vera Ray is at work at the hotel as a maid. She's left her 3 year old at home and the house was freezing cold as it had started to snow. The landlord was there for his rent money, now 3 weeks late but Daniel needed shoes.
He will force himself on her the next time to get his money's worth he threatened. When she gets home Danny is gone...
The story alternates from Vera, in the past to Claire 80 years in the future-present day.
Same date 80 years later: Claire Aldridge Kennsington works at the paper and her husband's, Ethan, family owns it. She called in and was given the blackberry winter story, due Friday.
The story of the missing boy 80 years prior has tugged at Claires' heart and she will write her story on that.
She gets her daily hot chocolate, Dominic owns the building now and allowed her to go upstairs, from the same building as where the bar used to be 80 years ago. There is an apartment upstairs where Vera used to live.
Claire has suffered a lot of grief over the past several years and hasn't moved on yet...
As I try to piece all the information together from different years I am shocked to find so many similarities between the two.
Such good memories of the danceathon when I watched it during movies of the 1930's.
When Claire has it all figured out she hopes the newspaper will allow her to run the story...
Love hearing of the other legends about the blackberry. This story kept my interest and I was able to read it in one day. Such a touching story.
